"Look kids, there's Big Ben, and Parliament ..."

We're not quite the Griswold family (although I'll happily sport Chicago Bears attire in any part of the world) but Zac and I did take our very own European vacation in April.  All of Zac's hard work in 2012 paid off and he earned a trip to Montreux, Switzerland through his company's President's Council program.

This was the first vacation that Zac and I took without our kiddo and while I was hesitant to head to the other side of the globe, there was no way we could pass up this opportunity.  Any concerns that I had quickly melted away as not only did we have an incredible time, but I don't think Cael even realized that we were gone since he got to spend the week with my parents and then Zac's mom.

One of the greatest parts of the trip was the complete lack of planning that it took on my part.  Zac's company planned every detail of our time in Switzerland ... we simply had to pick a couple of excursions and follow their specific packing recommendations.  I didn't need to calculate the appropriate number of diapers to pack, plan hours of distracting airplane activities or mentally prepare for the unknowns of European toddler jet lag.  We just packed our stuff and showed up at DFW ... that was a treat in itself.

We tacked on a day in London on our way to Montreux which could not have been any more perfect.  We landed around noon and spent the rest of the day exploring all of the big sights in London.  We had a ridiculously gorgeous day ... we actually got a little sunburned which I don't think happens very often in London ... in April.

We spent the afternoon strolling through Trafalgar Square,

visiting the palace guards (yes, he is VERY tall),

trying to open gates that were not meant to be opened,

and imagining the balcony kiss after Will and Kate's big day.

We saw Big Ben, Parliament, Westminster Abbey, the London Eye and a zillion red double-decker buses.

We couldn't have had a better day for our own sight-seeing tour.  We topped off the day at a real "chippie" (this one is for you, Jennifer Claire) and with a walk through Covent Garden.  We loved our brief introduction to London and look forward to visiting again.

We headed to Switzerland in the morning.  After a short flight and a beautiful drive through Swiss wine country, we checked into our hotel and found this view in our room:

The hotel itself was quite picturesque ...

... and the gardens and walkways through Montreux were breathtaking.

The scenery was incredible but the itinerary was just as amazing.  We enjoyed wine tasting in vineyards that monks first planted centuries ago (don't judge the nametags, they were very helpful) ...

... and a relaxing evening cruise on Lake Geneva ...

... that ended at a castle for an amazing dinner.

We enjoyed the Alps scenery from the comfort of a totally decked out historic train ...

... as we traveled to gorgeous (and delicious!) Northern Italy.

We also spent a little time on an Alpine glacier ... that's me!

The trip was more than we could have ever imagined.  The scenery, the food, the wine, the new friendships and the extra surprises from Zac's company were jaw-dropping, to say the least.  The best part, however, was the special time with this guy:
